(kayla) My group and I started off by doing the basic research on windmills. We researched what we could do with the materials we were allowed to use and we came up with a few basic designs.
(Moses) Together we discussed these ideas and came up with 3 top ideas.
We decided on a cardboard blade design, paper blade design, and styrofoam design while all using PBC pipes to make the base. After the top 3 ideas the next thing we worked on was a decision matrix to decide which blade design we’d use. the decision matrix scale was based on creativity cost and time. We decided that the paper design was most suitable for our group and our project.
(kayla) after that we conducted even more research on how the blades are shaped and which would produce the best energy. the shape that they most recommended was a curved blade. They also recommended having minimum of 3 or 4 blades parts on your pinwheel. After we conducted that research and had a basic idea of what our windmill should look like and we started building. the first thing we built was the base made of pbc pipe. the created flat square and built up from that. we put the motor given to us inside this hole in the pbc pipe.and after that we built the pin wheel. to build the pinwheel all we had to do was take a piece of paper and fold it certain ways to get the curved blade result.
(moses) We had to revise a lot during this project. whenever we attached the blade it would come flying off so we had to figure out a way to connect the blade better. we decided to use hot glue to attach the blade onto the motor.
Physics (Kayla, Moses)
(moses) Energy is essentially the ability to do work Radiant energy from the sun, transforms into thermal energy. when it hits the earth, and when uneven heat is between the land and sea it creates wind. which then takes another form energy that makes the blades on the windmill move.
(kayla) kinetic energy is the energy of motion. There are many types of kinetic energy that apply to windmiils such as thermal, mechanical the wind pushing against the wind mill is an action of motion or kinetic energy .
(moses) Potential energy is stored energy of position possessed by an object. you can see potential energy when the blades are moving, when there still, even the motor has potential energy. essentially potential energy is just stored energy. it has power but is not currently using it. Even with the example We showed you before we surprisingly found out that
(Kayla)conservation of energy basically states that you neither destroy or create energy, rather it transforms from one form to another just like wind turbines. When working with the windmills we see energy transformations, the transformations never rest.
